Snakes are the one of the most specialised animals in the biological world.
1.There are over 3000 kinds of snakes present in the world . They are present everwhere except Antrarctica.
2. They lost limbs during evolution ; in Python and Boa vestigial pelvic girdle seen .
3.Sternum , pectoral gland , tympanum and urinary bladder are absent in snakes.
4. Eyelids of snakes are immovable .
5. Snakes have bifted tongue. Tongue is sensitive to odour and vibration.
6. Snake lack middle ear ; thet perceive sound through skin.
7. Snakes shed scaly epidermis of skin in one piece ( ecdysis /Moulting ).
8. Locomotion of snake is helped by ribs and large ventral scute.
9. Most snakes are non - poisonous.
10. Python is largest non - poisonous snake .
Largest Python is Python Reticualas (10 m long).
11. Erynxjohnii (double headed snake) - Tail Resemble snake .
12. Poisnous snakes :- King Cobra , Krait , Vipers , Sea snake , Coral snake.
13. All poisonous snake have poison gland (which is modified parotid / superior labial gland)
14. The poison injected by special maxillary teeth located in maxilla ; poison teeth known as Fang.
15. Snake poison is a mixture of enzymes and specific toxins . It becomes fatal when mixed with blood .
16. There are two types of poison or venom present in snake :-
(a) Neurotoxic - Death by respiratory failure
(b) Hemotoxic - Death by haemorrhage .
17. The poison of Cobra , Krait and Sea snake is Neurotoxic.
18. The poison of viper is Hemotoxic.
19. Most fatal snake - Krait (inject large quantity).
